Review for Abberline- Breathe Out E.P.

I must admit after loading this E.P. up for a listen, the first track didn’t pull me in as much as I’d hoped, and after I’d listened to the whole thing, I still didn’t see where it fitted within the track order, it was the second track High Time that started to pull me in with its pleasingly indie foot-tapping melodic nature. The tracks that follow are a nice little collection, with some nice contrasts throughout. “Breath Out’ especially is a nice mix of angst-y understated vocals with sparse slow crescendo of the whole song in an etheral solo Jonny Greenwood might give nod of appreciation towards. Citing ‘Kings of Leon’ as one of their influences, and there is a definitely a sprinkling of ‘Followhill’ throughout.
Overall ‘Breathe Out E.P.’ has a very raw sound to it, not displeasingly so, but definite room for improvement production wise. This can be forgiven though the songs shine through for what they are, a true representation of the sort of live show you could expect, definitely worth a gander live if their E.P. is anything to go by. You can hear that this band has a lot to give in the future judging by this solid preliminary collection, my ears await…

A lot of music we refer to as emo nowadays lcehnicatly isn’t emo. People tend to assume emo is short for emotional punk, but it’s actually emotive punk. Indie music is basically stuff like The Killers, The Bravery, Silversun Pickups, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and their drummers usually have very limited drumkits, usually 4 peice sets, and the guitars usually have a more clean tone. Indie tends to be very simple musically, which is why critics often consider it as not a musician’s genre. Synth is also common in Indie. Personally, I can’t stand how popular both emo and indie have become, but there are a few exceptions: The Used is a good live band and their singer is one of the few, if not the only, real modern rock n roll personas in the emo genre; I liked some stuff from The Killers, and their attitude seems to be refreshingly less humble than their fellow indie counterparts. I know that if I looked really hard I might find a few others that I’d like, but I’m very dissatisfied with most popular rock in general now.
